Sonifying Porto (work title)

Miguel Cardoso (Portugal) and Laura Maes (Belgium) will combine their powers to create an interactive interface controlling the sounds of Porto. Under the guidance of Eion Brazil they will use different types of force sensing resistors and a webcam to let the audience activate sounds. The final goal is to produce an alternative map of Porto with different sound landmarks and invite the audience to create their own Porto inspired soundtrack.

We will use a Sony PCM-D1 to record sounds of the Bolhao market, the Douro, the seaguls, the train, the old tram, the cafe Majestic and others.

The force sensing resistors (6 FSR-174AS (CP42) & 2 spectra symbol ribbons) will be connected to a Coridium ARMmite processor.

The ARMmite ascribes MIDI numbers to the measured pressure. In a PD patch the MIDI numbers will be assigned to different ranges in order to attribute a different sound to a different pressure or to a different position on the ribbon.

The movement of the audience will be tracked in two ways: the amount of pressure as well as the movement from one sensor to the other. A webcam will be placed above the map. We will use Open Frameworks to track this movement and to control parameters. The intention is to motivate the audience to move to another sensor and to explore the map
